Rumor Mill: Mitsubishi continues EV Trend with New Truck

Shhh . . . Bill Penney Mitsubishi has a secret. Can you keep it? When we heard Mitsubishi say recently that it planned to lead the global market in electric vehicles, we were optimistic, but we needed more proof to be really excited. And, now, we can be! Rumor has it that the company is working on a new, light electric truck that is slated to hit the market sometime in early 2013. And, this EV looks like it will be more focused on a commercial market than previous models.
Mitsubishi plans to keep things simple and inexpensive. The EV should have a price of about $19,200 after Japanese government rates. This would make the new truck about $2,000 less than the Mitsubishi i, which currently holds the top spot as America's cheapest all-electronic vehicle. This wouldn't be the first time the company has played with the idea of building an EV truck: the i-MiEV Cargo concept truck showcased in 2009 at the Tokyo Motor Show was one of the first explorations of this idea.
Don't get too excited though, readers. Bill Penney wouldn't be surprised if the vehicle doesn't make it overseas to America from Japan. However, we can still look forward to the Mitsubishi i , along with some of the other eight EV vehicles the company has promised by 2016.
